The folders and items I had on desktop are also gone.

I thought that to change to folder view one would:  Right click on desktop -> Desktop Settings -> Layout: Folder View -> OK.

Those options are not available to me on right click.  Right clicking the desktop gives:  Undo, Redo, Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete, Clear, and Select All.

Any other directions I can try?  I have an image file from before the update, so in worst case I can revert to that.

Same problem as above. Also have a Big RED circle to the left of the message with a white negative sign. I can get the message to "disappear" (it's still there though) by changing Desktop appearance from Enlightenment to Breeze but the big Red Circle is still there. Can't change desktop picture. Right clicking shows same as above.
cp -R /etc/skel wants a place to copy too. Don't know where.
Should I get rid of Netrunner Rolling and go to Nurunner instead ?

No one said change the desktop theme.
To fix the issue, unlock the widgets, fix it's location used by Netrunner Desktop and then relock the widgets (only if you want to).

Note: If you run cp -R /etc/skel in your home directory, that is where it will copy to. Remember to type y when it askes to overwrite files.

Always check your mirrors status before updating: http://repo.manjaro.org/
The African mirror is marked as unknow ATM, this could mean that it is down or has been removed.
If this situation doesn't rectify itself on it's own, then you may need to run rank mirrors on your system:

This is a known issue, you'll need to use folder view or desktop view.
